Young EFFoST Driving Innovation in Sustainable Agriculture: Lukas Luggin

Lukas Luggin is making his way in the world of food. As a member of the Young EFFoST Council, he brings expertise in food innovation and agricultural sustainability, helping to shape the future of farming.

Originally from South Tyrol, a German-speaking region in northern Italy known for its innovative agricultural practices, Lukas has deep roots in the industry. His academic background took him across Europe, earning an Erasmus Mundus Master’s in Food Innovation and Product Design (FIPDes) from top universities: AgroParisTech (France), the University of Naples Federico II (Italy), and Lund University (Sweden). This international experience gave him a strong foundation in f sustainable product development, food technology, and innovative agricultural practices. 

Currently, Lukas applies his skills at the South Tyrolean Farmers’ Association (Südtiroler Bauernbund), where he works in the Department of Innovation and Energy. His role is to help farmers integrate innovative solutions into their businesses—whether through technologies or the development of market-ready products. By collaborating with research institutions and industry experts across Europe, he ensures that scientific advancements turn into real-world benefits for farmers. 

One example of Lukas’ work is in INNOLeguminosen, part of the European Innovation Partnership (EIP-Agri) and aligned with the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). This initiative promotes legume cultivation and the development of high-value products, offering farmers new market opportunities while enhancing sustainability. By working with local farmers and partnering with research organizations like the Laimburg Research Centre and the Management Center Innsbruck, the project is helping to create a more resilient and diversified agricultural sector. 

Lukas’ academic background, practical experience, and commitment to fostering innovation in agriculture make him a valuable member of the EFFoST Young Council. His work exemplifies how collaboration and research can drive forward-thinking solutions in agriculture, ensuring a more sustainable future for the sector.
